Educational Points Automatic Watches and Cheap Watch Winders:
Educational Points about Automatic Watches and Automatic Watch Winders
Point #1.) Different watches require different settings for winding direction. 3 settings exist: Clock Wise(CW). Counter Clock Wise (CCW) and Bi-Directional meaning it winds in both directions (CW and CCW). Most Rolex watches need Bi-Directional Winding as do the majority of watches. Most winders are factory set on bi-directional winding as a default.
Point #2.) Different Watches require different Ideal (TPD) Turns Per Day settings. Bidirectional is the most common setting. (Note: Over winding a watch by a few hundred TPD will not hurt it. All modern Automatic Watches are built with a "slip differential", which prevents this minor over winding. Otherwise nervous people could never wear an automatic watch. However, severe over winding should be avoided. You can't over wind an automatic watch but manual over winding of any manual watch is a bad thing and can damage the watch. A watch which requires 600 TPD will work fine if wound say 1200 TPD. However, this may concern an owner of an expensive watch. Orbita watch winders take the most care making winders programmable for your watche's exact needs. This programmability is expensive, though.
Point #3.) Constant Winding without a rest period is bad for a watch. Cheap Winders tend to wind 24/7. Sitting unwound for years is also bad for an automatic watch! Opinions vary with regard to this last point about sitting around, but we think mechanical watches should be used and kept in working order. We also recommend that you visit a reliable watch repairman on a regular basis for tune-ups. Automatic watches cost as much as some cars! I hope you get your car serviced!
Point #4.) Putting a Bi-directional Watch on a cheap one directional Winder is bad for the watch. Why? Bi-Directional Automatic Watches are designed for alternating direction. On a cheap winder it would not be getting the alternate direction. Eventually the watch will run out of stored power.
Point #5.) Buying a cheap watch winder is always a mistake.
With winders you get what you pay for. Less is more: More wasted time, more headaches, more money wasted, more disappointment, more junk.
