Someone to be careful that not every winder can wind a Rolex watch. Is this true? I thought Rolex was easy to wind?

OK, some Swiss watch history: In 1931 a little known company by the name of Rolex invented the automatic watch movement, which Rolex called the perpetual rotor. This nifty little invention allowed the wearer to wind his watch with just the slightest flick of the wrist. Virtually every modern automatic watch has a rough copy of this rotor inside it. These days many rotors only wind in one direction, but Rolex who started it all chose to make their rotor "perpetual" and wind both forward and backward (clockwise and counter-clockwise). So if you move your wrist, it winds your watch. This ensures the watch is always charged and running. This means a Rolex is easy to wind and easy to over wind. Most automatic watches copied the Pioneer and included their bi-directional rotar. Some high end watches in order to be different and also to prevent over winding have chosen to only allow one way winding. Either Clockwise or Counter Clockwise.

This means that most watch winders can indeed handle Rolex watches and most non Rolex watches too.

Why? Well, even though the watch may not have Rolex on the face, there is a good chance that it has a Rolex movement inside (or a closely backward engineered copy). The basic Rolex style movement requires at least 650 bidirectional Turns Per Day on a watch winder. We recommend at least 600 and under 1,000 Turns Per Day. We think it is critical not to over stress the rotor of your watch. Personally I prefer to be safe than sorry. Penny Wise and Pound Foolish is not the way to manage an expensive automatic watch. So buy a good and not a cheap winder for your Rolex.

That said, the answer to the comment is: "Yes! Any Winder sold by WatchCases.com will safely wind your Rolex. Some Winders will do a better job. The more you spend the better winder you will get and the better maintenance of your expensive watch you will get!"

The corollary is not every winder we sell will wind every other brand of Automatic. Which is also true. If you are not sure we will look your information up and call you back or email our winder recommendations to you, plus if you email us we will probably be able to extend to you Free Shipping plus a money saving coupon off any sale price currently offered on the winder we recommend! Most Cheap Winders over-wind Rolex watches and under-wind other luxury brands. (technically cheap winders may not "over wind" the watch, since modern watches have a slip mechanism to protect the winding spring from snapping, but they do over stress the watch and overuse is bad. Just look at MLB injured reserves (Major League Baseball).)

Damage to the watch is not as important of an issue when buying a winder as is the fact the winder will probably not work for a variety of watches and it will grow loud and break within a year or two. A watch winder made to the standards of a high quality watch should last you 8-10 years of quiet continuous performance. You can buy a cheap watch and you can buy a cheap winder. Both may look good, but both will not perform in the same manner. I personally would pay the extra money for a quality Rolex, Breitling, or even high end Invicta over a fake any day! (I would have said Franck Muller, Patek Phillippe or Harry Winston but, for now, I will simply lust after them!)
